As we reflect on managing and leading our teammates, “The Great Resignation” is on our minds. What many won’t reveal is that this “thing” we started paying lots of attention to last year has been unfolding steadily since 2009. It’s an unmistakable trajectory of turnover that, we believe threatens our conventional thinking about retention and those attendant tools we have been using to strengthen it. This discussion intentionally takes the conversation beyond the problem’s statement and to potential solutions – solutions that several years ago, many of you wouldn’t have even considered (like working from home). Using both a synthesis of the thinking swirling around in the consulting/management world and our observations of community banking contexts across the county, but especially in Ohio, we outline a patchwork of new approaches and thinking that, we believe, more effectively addresses the contemporary retention challenge. We look forward to sharing our thinking and tickling yours.
